Whakarāpopototanga: | GFL teaching which is designed to enable interaction should not reduce the varieties of German to the standard varieties. Nevertheless, dialects in particular are often treated as a footnote in GFL teaching. This is why it is important to provide learners with authentic points of contact with the varieties of German. This article presents a practical example of an extracurricular encounter project on this topic, which was carried out at the Universities of Zadar (Croatia) and Rzeszów (Poland) in 2022. An evaluation was carried out based on a survey of the participants. In a series of online workshops, students got to know dialect speakers from Austria, Germany and Switzerland and worked with them on the basics of their dialects and the respective regions. This article presents the project and reflects and expands on it. It is an example of a digital encounter project that enables learners to actively engage with speakers of different varieties. The concept is transferable to different learning groups in German-speaking countries and abroad. |
