Zusammenfassung:The integration of multimodal elements in messenger interactions plays a significant role in enabling participation in multilingual virtual collaboration. This paper presents findings on the multimodality of messenger interactions among bilingual teams in two virtual exchange projects conducted in 2020 and 2022. These projects involved New Zealand-based German as a Foreign Language students and German English teacher students, who utilized various communication channels such as messenger services. The study’s focus is on relevant multimodal aspects of bilingual messenger communication, the multimodal messenger interaction of language learners, and the functions that multimodality serves within these interactions. The data corpus consists of messenger interactions from three focus teams, comprising a total of 570 turns. Data were analysed using interactional multimodal analysis adapted for foreign language interaction research. Findings underscore the importance of recognizing and harnessing multimodal dimensions within virtual language learning activities for language development.
